I have had plenty of socialising though which has been great fun and also some amazing days, for example - the Parade in London.
Before this, I had a busy dressage day at the College Equitation centre at Keysoe. I took four horses, Amber, Dave, Kenny and Bruno. All are in need of dressage improvement and only practice makes perfect. Jill Day came and kindly helped me all day long - literally - from 9 until 5!! Amber was very good and was 6th and 3rd in the Novices, Dave was 4th and 1st in the Elementaries, Kenny was 3rd and 2nd and Bruno won both the Medium and Advanced Medium. So all were really encouraging.
Wednesday was very productive as I have hopefully secured a new sponsor - all will be revealed soon .......
London Parade.......
Thursday was a most phenomenal day - one I shall never forget.
The day started early, breakfast at the Guildhall with all my fellow athletes - after seeing some of the rowers, sailors and athletes, I soon realised I had missed out being in Beijing, although perhaps Hong Kong was better for my concentration. We went on float six, only Tina and myself were present from our team, as Le Lion D'Angers was on at the same time.
We shared a float with the Paralympic dressage riders, Table Tennis players, Pentathletes and Dressage riders. The crowd were astronomical, there were even people hanging out of the windows waving and congratulating us. I found the whole experience incredibly moving and exciting and when people recognised me even more fantastic!
When we finally arrived in Trafalgar Square to meet even bigger crowds I could hardly believe the response an it has certainly made me realise that I MUST win a medal on home ground in 2012. That moment of pride is a very special memory and feeling, and until you experience it you cannot describe it. Certainly makes the hard work worth it.
I met the Olympic heroes, Rebecca Addlington, Chris Hoy, Tom Daley to name a few, and then meeting the Queen at Buckingham Palace made the day complete. It was fantastic to meet the other athletes and I can't wait to see them all again at 2012.
It was back to work on Friday though with a trip to Towerlands for some Show Jumping and I took Amber, Dave, Kenny and Bruno again. Amber and Dave jumped very well, Amber clear and Dave one down in the 1.10m, and in the speed class they all jumped good rounds, although I tend not to go very fast in there, using it as a schooling round rather than to win.
Bruno jumped superbly in the Foxhunter and Kenny just had one down. It's surprising how the horses need practice jumping indoors again, the fences come up very quickly.
Suffolk Sports Awards
The Sunday evening was spent at the Suffolk Sports awards- where they presented a trophy to me for my part in the Olympics. I was also runner up for Sports Personality of the year, probably as close as I'll get for now! I was astounded at the talent in Suffolk, some of the young athletes winning numerous titles and breaking records. Also, the disabled athletes and their determination and positive attitudes, we really can learn from their strong mentalities.
Horse shopping - Ireland
The beginning of the following week was spent in Ireland looking for horses with Richard Sheane, an agent through whom I bought Azeb (Harry). Following his success I thought Richard could find me something similar, which he did, in fact I've seen three lovely horses so will wait to see if they pass the vet etc. This will make a rather large dent in our bank balance as we don't have a big backer / owner, hence now I am actively seeking half owners as with some of the current horses here.
I genuinely feel these horses are top quality and along with my existing team I should have eight real possibles for 2012 so we should be well equipped.
Back to Bury St Edmunds on Thursday and I met the Mayor of St Edmundsbury and again received another lovely award, my mantelpiece is becoming cluttered, at last!
Friday and Saturday was more affiliated dressage at Fenning Farm, ideal for me, only 45mins down the road and good facilities. Dave was 1st and 5th in the Elementaries and Kenny was 2nd and 6th again in the Elementaries. A definite improvement from two weeks ago so heading in the right direction quickly.
I returned on Saturday to a very windy and cold Fenning Farm where the horses went well again, Amber was 2nd in the Novice and Beanie was 6th. Sunday was spent jumping the horses and riding the youngsters, 3 year olds I'm backing - Bomber, my horse by Accondy, who is quite sharp but going well, and Brian, my Fleetwater Opposition horse who is rather laid back.
Preparing for another busy week, more socialising as I have the Eventing ball this weekend so off buying dresses the next couple of days!!
Oct 15
Have had a good week - Elodie (new head groom) has turned my yard around and it is now very organised and incredibly tidy. So much easier with a head girl as I've been quite busy this year. It is great that Elodie has come with such motivation - something that has been missing with some of my previous staff! My job is now getting much easier as I can just concentrate on riding and doing my admin, entries, website work and get back into a big fitness campaign now I have more free time.
I had photo's taken of Jasper and myself on Wednesday for Avieform advertising, he looks a little woolly but still very good - not long until I bring him back into work, can't wait and neither can he! Jasper really hates having holidays - being turned out in a field is not his idea of fun!
I worked the horses on Thursday before leaving at 11 to go to Woodbridge where I had to give a speech about the Olympics and how I got there and try to be an inspiring person to others, hopefully I was. If they saw a small piece of how proud and excited I still am, having competed at Beijing then that's great. The conference was for Suffolk Sports and there were about 70 people. I quite enjoy speaking, depending on whom I am speaking to, I think some people do their best to look disinterested but on Thursday they were very receptive.
Friday I took some horses to an arena locally to work the ones I'd entered at Keysoe on Tuesday. They were generally very good but Bruno and Amber are definitely better at home, both become a little distracted out! The weather has been absolutely gorgeous - warm and sunny, something we haven't had for a long time, to be riding out in a T-shirt in October is very unusual.
I had finished by 4pm so I could go to Brighton for my birthday which was on Saturday - 31! Very old now.
Had a quiet Friday night, pizza and wine and lots of sleep ready for Saturday. We went to the beach during the day which was so warm and sunny - couldn't have had better weather. In the evening my friends came down and met up with cousins and partners and we had a great night out - birthdays are great excuses to have a party! Something we don't have much chance of doing recently, except immediately after the Olympics. Brighton certainly was very busy, no comparison to Bury St Edmunds!
I came home on Sunday feeling quite tired, must be my age, and had a relatively easy day on Monday too as the saddler - Mark Lister, came out to check my Albion Dressage Saddles and Bev Rippon pulled some wolf teeth out, lot's of blood for such small teeth, and I'm a touch squeamish so I try to stay away whilst this process is going on.
Got the horses ready for Keysoe - the unaffiliated dressage campaign has already started!!
Oct 7
It is only a matter of days now until the end of the season so having a busy time in preparation for the final event.
I took Red Amber to Keysoe for the Novice which went very well, she was a little excited to be competing and was quite strong in the dressage so her mark was 36.7. She jumped a superb clear in the Show Jumping and also went very well cross country which I was delighted with as I did think some of the course was quite tough. The bottom loop was very twisty meaning it was difficult to keep a good rhythm.
Amber was excellent though, felt very classy and I was really pleased that she finished 8th. I had no competition on the Sunday and enjoyed the lovely weather, warm and sunny at last, whilst working the horses. Today was fittening work so cantered up hills (I have to search quite hard for these!).
Had lessons with Jill on Wednesday, rode Dave, Amber and Bruno - all of which are improving dramatically each week. A winter of dressage lessons beckons and hopefully we can pick up some good prizes.
Jumped the horses on Thursday with Barrett; Kenny, Dave and Beanie. They were all excellent again, Kenny has really improved from his advanced run at Burnham which is great. I often find when they jump bigger tracks it really improves their jump and technique. This certainly is the case with Kenny.
Friday was the beginning of a long weekend up at Witton Castle, Durham. I wasn't keen on keeping the horses running until the end of October as they have run well enough this year so the last intermediate (and Advanced) other than Tweseldown was Witton and I have only heard good (but sometimes wet) reports so decided to go on the long journey to the other end of England for my last event. We made it up in 6 hours including a big traffic jam, to our stabling which was very nice. We stayed with a very hospitable couple, even went to the pub for dinner each night!
Unfortunately the rain started early morning and didn't stop for most of the day - in fact, it got progressively worse and the wind felt like gale force too! After it took one and a half hours to get towed into the lorry park we realised that, perhaps, the ground might not be so good after all and when my friend Rachel sent me a photo of a tractor towing another tractor and lorry we decided cancellation would be a strong possibility. I worked all the horses, Dave, Kenny, Bruno and Beanie, who were all very good considering. Dave had the worst of it - torrential rain and wind and freezing temperatures, so was not so keen. Bruno was very good in his test considering the deep mud. It's good practise for them as too often now at the big three day events we have deep mud in the dressage. He got a 36 - slightly better than Burnham. Unfortunately after this they cancelled the event as it was relentless rain so we decided as it was late we would stay up that night and drive home in the morning.
I'm very lucky, now I have a new Head Groom, Elodie Frost, who can also share the driving. This has made a huge difference already and I shall definitely return to Witton - nowhere will now seem too far! We were back at 2pm and unpacked the very muddy lorry and tack and re packed it for the next day which was a national British Dressage training day where I was a guinea pig for Yogi Breisner's session on pole work for dressage horses. I took Dave (Mightaswell) who was very well behaved as usual and worked on straightness, balance and softness using poles in different places - walk, trot and canter. I personally don't do a huge amount of pole ground work except in canter so I found it very beneficial.
So now I have finished all my events, feel a little cheated though as it was cancelled. I am planning my winter, i.e., jumping and dressage shows and clinics until January when I holiday - yippee !!
Sept 24
Had another very busy week, life should calm down soon now as the season is nearly finished for me. Have taught a few lessons this week including one for Baileys - a prize winner came for a lesson in preparation for Keysoe.
Pennie Hooper massaged some horses on Wednesday - they do feel so much better afterwards and so do I! However, today I went to Annabel Jenks, an osteopath, to be treated, as riding all these horses again (after just the one in Hong Kong) can make my back a little stiff.
The week was generally very good with the horses all coming along very well, I went to Purston Manor on Thursday where they have had a lot of rain and although it was a beautifully sunny day I decided not to jump either Harry (Azeb) or Joe (Jorrocks Curtis) as the ground was really quite tacky and I had entered them for Burnham Market. So they both did their tests, 33 and 27, respectively and sent home. I think that there is always another day if the ground isn't to my liking and this is the advantage of having not too many horses as I can pick and choose where to run them.
Friday, I had some lessons with Barrett and jumped Joe, Harry, Amber and Bob (Good Sport) in preparation for Burnham. All were excellent. I also XC schooled them so they were fully prepared. Mathew Flowers helped me school them all on Saturday morning. He was very helpful and I managed to ride them all before setting off at 11am for my grandparent's 60th Wedding Anniversary, how amazing! Had a lovely lunch seeing them and my family (as it's not often I get the time) so it was good to catch up again and they were all very impressed with the Bronze Medal.
I was up at 3.30am for Burnham - a horribly early start. I had 5 horses going; Harry in the Novice, Joe, Beanie and Dave in the Intermediate and Bruno's Advanced Test. Dave was superb, did a double clear and finished 5th, Beanie did a good test and had a very uncharacteristic four down but was great XC (I am going to change his saddle back to his old one as this could be the reason for the fences down - possibly). Joe did his first intermediate and did a good test on 35, he is still a little green at this level and had one down and was clear XC, he was very good as the course asked enough questions for a first time!
Harry was superb again - did the best dressage in his section, 28, had the first fence down then clear and was unbelievable XC - very brave and finished 2nd. Very exciting for his first ever Novice. I went back on Monday to ride the Advanced horses, Bruno, Bob and Kenny. They all did good tests (although they still have some improving to do) and got quite good marks. Bruno jumped superbly, did a double clear and finished 9th - not bad for his second ever Advanced. Kenny jumped well, had one down, and was flying XC until he hit a fence behind and just lost a little confidence and he had a run out at the ditch in the coffin but finished well. Again, I was very pleased as this was his first Advanced.
Bob just had one down SJ and when I set off XC I realised I should not have run him as the ground was just too firm for him so I had a run out and just cantered round to finish. I am very precious with Bob as he has had previous injuries and I think now might be the time for him to become my dressage / jumping horse and perhaps not risk him at Events.
So generally Burnham was very successful with all the horses moving up a level.
Sept 17I have now found myself 4 very good team members headed by Elodie Frost. I'm very excited at the prospect of having such a good experienced Head Girl, and I'm sure so are the rest of the team. I'm still finding things missing, you would be amazed at the things obviously 'needed' by others!!
I went to Towerlands to jump Harry (who did his first Newcomers superbly) Joe, Beanie and Dave. I also rode Amber who is now at home and still going very well. I am very excited again about her as her form returns so quickly.
I went to Burghley for some interviews etc. for my Sponsors - it is nice to be able to do something in return, other than riding. I’m enjoying the interviews, and Jonty Evans, who was the main interviewer at the World of the Horse, was superb - very funny! I was quite concerned when I saw only 3 people listening to one interview, but delighted that by the end of mine (when I was joined by team members, Tina and William) we must've had about 50 people!!
The rain was relentless and I must admit that on Friday I was really not fussed about riding there, but waking up on Saturday I was very disappointed not to be competing, even though the conditions were not ideal. I was surprised at how many people decided to retire after a stop, and maybe with hindsight and with a wet and cancelled Blenheim they may have wished to have carried on, but the ground was a massive factor and the horses were returning very tired.
I am so delighted for my team mates William and Mary. To have finished in the top 4 places is unbelievable. On Friday Jonty had asked me to give William some tips, to which I replied 'Cut your corners and ride straight lines' (he had told me this in Hong Kong) and I'm so pleased my advice worked!!
Had another busy week with more horses coming in, including a very nice 5 year old of Lavinia Wells called 'Ace'. He was here for his lead up to his first event at Little Downham.
On Wednesday I went to the Jays with Cast Away (who needs no introduction) Joe, Amber and Bob (Good Sport). Cast Away jumped very well although the classes are a bit on the small side for him. Amber was also very good, 4th in the discovery and Joe was 2nd in the Newcomers with a double clear !! I rode Bob after the competition had finished as I seemed to run out of time, but he went very well and doesn't need a lot of practice.
Went XC schooling to Rachel Upton’s on Thursday where the jumps are perfect for young horses, and for more experienced, there is plenty of variety. I took Amber, Cast Away and Ace, they were all superb, very exciting. Richard Maxwell came over in the afternoon and helped with a couple of the horses and treated some. He makes a big difference with them both in behaviour and physically.
I had four to ride on Saturday at Little Downham. Dave and Beanie in the Intermediate Novice, Kenny in the Intermediate and Bruno in the Open Intermediate. The ground was absolutely superb, I couldn't believe how there was no standing water everywhere! I think the ground was the best ever. I feel for others having their events cancelled now the season is coming to an end, there doesn't much time to enter for extra competitions.
Dave did a good test and Beanie is still improving, so had reasonable marks, but I was disappointed to get some time faults in the show jumping but it was a very twisty course. They both went superbly XC. Kenny was very excited to be out again so his test and show jumping rounds were spoilt by tension, but again was good XC. Bruno did a good test, perhaps harshly marked, but jumped fantastically - a double clear.
I returned the next day with Lavinia's 'Ace Flight' who went extremely well in his first event to win the Open Intro. I also schooled Joe and Bob on the flat to practice for next week at Burnham Market, I hope they will both do stunning tests! I also XC schooled Amber at the end of the day and she was phenomenal.. This mare has so much talent and I’m delighted she's showing all her class again. I can't say 'thank you' enough to Richard.
Sept 2
After all the celebrations it was back to normal (quite glad of it too !) Bank Holidays are just the same as any other day for horse-owners so no day off, but Vanessa my ex head girl came to ride out with me, was great to see her, there are so many people that live locally but I don't have a chance to see much as am always so busy. Tuesday was busy, had Pennie Hooper, the massage lady here to do some of the horses - she does a superb job, they always feel much better afterwards. Jill taught me on three horses, all went very well. I had a rather unfortunate day on Wednesday, I found a number of things were missing from the yard and I am now looking for new staff. Rode Amber though and gave her a jump, she was excellent so this was a great positive on a bad day.
Thursday I jumped most of the horses, some with Barrett. Also took some XC schooling just to make sure they wouldn't be spooky on Sunday. A good dress rehearsal ! We had a lovely meal in the evening - another Olympic celebration, my very kind friends Rachel and Hugo are truly excellent hosts !!
Decided on Friday that with an 8.30 dressage I couldn't possibly leave at 3am Sunday morning, so made some phone calls and decided to go Saturday to Firle to exercise the horses - and then Tina Cook was kindly going to put me and my 4 horses up. So Friday was packing the lorry and getting ready to leave reasonably early Saturday morning. I spent quite a long time Friday afternoon with Kerry discussing ways to increase horse power and new sponsorship. Mostly these came through existing friends but I need to look further afield now. Hopefully a few sponsors will approach me now !! Will wait to see ............
I rode a couple before we left for Firle place at 10.30. It was a fantastically sunny day (at last !) but this meant the traffic was all heading to the coast with me. After 3 1/2 hours I reached Firle, I worked the horses then walked the courses. Both are very nice for young horses, but the course could do with a little rain (which was delivered on Sunday morning in bucket loads!) I made my way to Tina's from Firle and hit more traffic, it was getting quite late (7pm) and we still had to plait some of the horses and feed them etc, and it was already getting dark. The journey took a turn for the worse when I saw a blue car parked in half the narrow road - so I knocked on every door hoping someone would move it, but of course the owner was out somewhere. With some very careful driving I just about fitted through - felt a little like the proverb - through the eye of a needle ! and did the same again into Tina's yard. I think she was a little surprised to see quite how big the truck is ! ! I did say I hoped it would look the same Sunday morning after I left the yard and road !!
Tina's husband Phil cooked a superb BBQ and Sacha (Pemble) came around to join us. Wasn't a late night as we all had an early start. Made it out of the yard a little easier than going in but I was amazed the owner of the blue car had moved that but left a red car in it's place but even worse ! So woke them up at 7am and they kindly moved it for me. I was concerned I'd still be there Sunday lunchtime !!
We drove through the most amazing thunderstorm on the way, I did wonder if it would be cancelled but a little further down the road and the weather was not too bad, and the rain had softened the ground perfectly. I rode Harry in the Pre Novice - he did a good test, 33.5 and double clear - finished 5th. This was his last PN so was great - he was very good XC. Beanie's (Breeze) test still needs to improve but he jumped superbly to finish 6th in the Novice. Dave and Joe both did very good tests but the small SJ didn't help them and neither jumped as well as they should have, but were excellent XC so both were 12th. Joe was put in the Open Novice section and would've been placed quite well if in an ordinary Novice section - never mind.
Had a good trip home and was back by 9.30pm so not too late to bed, ready for another big week ahead!
August 28
I have decided that now I am back I won't have the time to write a daily diary, but I am sure my day to day routine in England is not nearly so interesting as in Hong Kong !
We arrived home on the Saturday after a business class flight (BA very kindly upgraded us) putting that medal round the Chinese check-in mans neck was a very clever move Alice Fox Pitt!! I slept for 7 hours and still felt quite tired due to the late nights before we left. I was also very burnt, had sunbathed a little too long but now I'm back I'm glad I did, this weather is rubbish !!
Collected Jasper from Stansted in the evening, I was very lucky to be able to go onto the plane and have a look round and even have my photo taken with the pilot ! Jasper came off the plane well - he looked great and was quite bright ! Happy to be home though now.......
Collected two of my horses from the field, Azeb and Bomber (my 3 year old) was quite surprised to see the 3yo had beaten Harry up (as he's nearly twice the size !) Rode mine at home.
Monday was a press day, BBC Look East and Anglia News came out for interviews. I must admit it is still all so exciting and can't quite believe it all !
Jumped my horses ready for Towerlands on Wednesday - my first competition back.
Have developed a horrible cough though - is some joke about bird flu (rather than man flu) going round, but the cough is quite unattractive whatever it is.
Left for Towerlands on Wednesday at a sociable time as I haven't any horses needing to jump in the British Novice at present (this means lay-ins !). All were superb, had some minor places, 6th in Discovery, 7th and 3rd in Newcomers and lots of double clears, very exciting. Had the TV even come and interview me there - people are now joking I have my own TV Crew that follow me round ! had a late finish - 9.30pm, showing how keen I am as showjumping is a hobby compared to eventing.
Had lessons with Jill Day on Thursday which went very well and then found out that Highclere was cancelled that weekend, very disappointing I was looking forward to competing there, however it does give me more time to work on their dressage and fitness.
Friday was great, XC schooling at Ely - I took Dave (Mightaswell) Beanie (Breeze) Kenny and Joe (Jorrocks Curtis). All were great, especially Dave, he is a superstar as has not been out for a year and now out twice in a week and just picks up where he left off, so will be ready for Firle next week. A poor girl had a fall though and dislocated her shoulder (which I know from experience is very painful) and Ed (one of my lads) had to drive their lorry home - it looked quite old so I was hoping he'd be back before dark ! I then went over to Richard Maxwell's where he has been re-training my mare Amber ; I felt quite emotional riding her, she has been so difficult I never thought I'd be able to ride and enjoy her again. He really has worked miracles and once again she is a very exciting prospect - especially for 2012.
This set me up for a happy evening as my friends had organised a party for me in Bury St Edmunds. Lot's of people came and we had a great time. Many thanks Bar 3! The night carried on quite late and I felt very ropey the next day - thank you parties like these don't happen too often, I'm too old !! I met my friends Saturday night for a meal and not a late night !
Still suffered slightly on Sunday but had a good day, rode all the horses here and then Amber again who was even better than last time, very excited and should be able to take her home again soon I hope......
Took Jasper to the Village Fete - where we were met with an enormous reception - everybody has been so kind and supportive. Jasper enjoyed all the attention, he knows he's done something very special. He wasn't that keen on the four donkeys however, and when one went marching up to him I could see World War 3 breaking out, luckily the donkey changed direction at the last minute and peace was maintained.
Had a delicious BBQ at my best friend Jenny's (and boyfriend Brett) and another early night - have sleep to catch up on !
Finally a sunny day (and a much clearer head). Cantered the horses around our slightly hilly stubble fields, some are still looking a little tubby ! but that always happen on return from a 3 day where the horses look like whippets ! Had some free time in the afternoon so the lorry was not only washed but polished too, and the yard looks superbly tidy after having a spring clean. Only painting the jumps and more fence creosoting and all will be perfect ..........
August 12
Tuesday - Luckily we didn't have an early start today as the Show Jumping was on so late. Great atmosphere at Sha Tin and being evening time seemed to intensify the whole thing. Jasper jumped really well, just the one down in the middle of the combination which is not like him but with so much to look at in the big arena and the previous days Cross Country exertion, I think it was still a good performance.
The team performed well throughout and getting the bronze medal is still a huge achievement and we are all so thrilled. It was also fantastic for us all to be able to get behind Tina and Miners Frolic and watch her perform so well to go double clear and get the individual bronze - it really made it very special. So now the hard work is all over and we have a very short space of time to relax and enjoy Hong Kong.
August 11
Monday - The big day, have been working for this for a long time now so high expectations. Had a great night's sleep which was brilliant, nothing worse than not sleeping the night before a big XC. Got to the course at 7am and checked Jasper, looked great. He definitely knew something exciting was about to happen. Walked a few of the fences again, was happy with everything.
First few set off and came back looking good but you know when Toddy comes back with 26 time faults that we were in for a tough time ! Daisy was superb as ever going first and jumped all the straight routes (including the horrible second last). It was evident from the first few that the 2nd last was going to cause problems. Little did I know it would catch me out. William is the master at XC riding which he showed again and Tina and Miners Frolic looked superb especially as he is only 10.
Before I set off I did feel very nervous before I got on, however as soon as you start riding all the nerves disappear and adrenaline takes over. He warmed up beautifully, felt really up for it. Did approx 30 mins and kept going back to the misting fans so he wasn't hot before the start. We set off across country very well, decided now was my chance to go for it as there was not alot of galloping stretches so I wouldn't be too far behind the leaders times. He jumped brilliantly over the first half and I think this is a contributing factor to his fatigue as he gives it his all, never touches a fence.
About 6 mins around he started to get tired but still jumped very well then in the last minute which is basically all uphill used up all his energy, hence coming to the house you don't have much adjustability and the brushes even less. I had decided it would take too long to circle between the 2 elements but obviously with hindsight wished I had. He landed too short over the first so we were on 2 and a half, not ideal and so he ran out which is so unlike him (my first XC penalty in well over a year).
However no time for doom and gloom as the team still finished in bronze medal position thanks to Mary's superb round. I thought the course was great, made a real competition of it and the fact that the time was impossible was great too and didn't produce manic riding to chase it but good competitive riding. The horses were all good in the evening so we rested and went to the Sheraton to meet family and Owners. Then bed ready for another exciting day.
August 10
Sunday - Woke up at 5.10 and suddenly realised this is the big day, although Monday will be the worst nerves when I wake up ! Felt very calm and headed to the stables to lunge and ride Jasper for 5.45am. He was very settled so I didn't want to do too much but still aware that there were plenty of other horses warming up well then suddenly changing when they went into the main arena as there is serious atmosphere in there.
Tina did a great test (40) so if I could get a good score that would get us closer to the Australians. Worked Jasper again at 7.10 but no earlier as he really does only need 1/2 hr. Felt perfect so I could really ride him. Decided I needed the full 2 mins before they rang the bell to get him used to the flowers and cameras so in I went at 7.39. I can honestly say that it was the most amazing feeling riding into that main arena. Felt very lucky to be part of it all and the fact that Jasper suddenly had the most amazing trot helped too !!
The test generally went well, he was a little spooky at the flowers but fairly good. The first change was late of the centre line and was not too keen on medium walk but other than that did a very solid test, and the changes at the end were superb so I was slightly disappointed I wasn't given more than 7's for these but the overall score I was happy with at 43.5, not bad for nearly our personal best at the Olympics!!
Mary went after and did a superb test (38) so as a team we are 4th and individually I'm 18th, hopefully not too far down to stand a chance of individual honours too !!
Walked the course again, a very hot day. Course looks good again, know all the terrain extremely well now. Have every lump and bump (of which there are many !) planned to help to be speedy as this is going to decide the medals in my opinion. Rested when I got back, and an early night ready for a serious next day ...............
August 9
Saturday - Woke up and watched a couple of the tests in my room as we have a channel in the hotel with the Eventing on - superb! Went to watch my team mates finish on around the 50 mark and Tina goes tonight at 20.54. Hopefully she will do a test to catch the Aussies who are a long way in front !
Walked the XC course again, it's so much better when it's sunny - again it's looking better and I have finally decided on my routes. Back to the hotel, short sunbathe and lunch then back to the stables to work Jasper and watch Tina then an early night as it will be an early start tomorrow ...................
August 8
Friday - Another day of rain, pouring rain again, in fact so much that I had to work Jasper in the indoor school. His work is superb so he can recreate this in the test we should get a very good mark I hope. Went to walk the XC course again, looks better this time, still a couple of fences I'm making my mind about but will make a plan and see how things are riding. Very humid, I prefer the heat I think and prefer it not to pour with rain too!
Back in the village to get tidied up for the trot up, we have to wear our Adidas kit provided, we're lucky as ours is nice (some of the teams look like they're in costume rather than outfits ! they admit this too !). Jasper looked great, the girls spend a huge amount of time perfecting them for the trot up. All trotted well although there was some speculation about an insignificant lump on Parkmore Ed which gave us a small fright.
Put on the Opening Ceremony outfits and went to our own at the Racecourse. They put on a superb show with various entertainment and good and drink and at 8pm had a live link to Beijing. The Opening Ceremony there looked phenomenal, it would've been fantastic to have been able to go but with next day dressage starting it just wasn't practical.
Watched more back at the hotel, couldn't stay out late as Daisy's dressage was at 07.41 the next day. This will be my time on Sunday morning too.
August 7
Thursday - The storm has gone thank goodness although we still get serious rain at times. Very warm though so you do dry off very quickly, it's just the air conditioning they freeze you with !
Rode Jasper for approx 30 mins, went very well, nearly ready for his test. Was very humid today, he didn't sweat too much but I was quite hot ! We must've have acclimatise now as rarely using the misting fans although it is cooler. Went to Bees River to walk the course. Is big, technical and very undulating. Should suit us so very positive. Ground looks good too.
Had more familiarisation in the evening but Dressage this time. The arena looks very grand now. I can imagine it'll be quite a feeling when I canter in for my test when the stadium is full of people!! My parents and family have now arrived to went to the Sheraton to meet them and catch up, then bed ready for an early start, all going to be hectic from now on as it's the trot up tomorrow.........
August 6
Wednesday -Woke up with a text from Daily saying that we had a force 8 typhoon with us so all on shut down. Hadn't mentioned this before as it was only a category 3 but now this was serious stuff ! All shuttle services were stopped and if you were at the stables there was a good chance you'd end up getting stuck there so we stayed put.
Had a very leisurely breakfast then off to the gym for more punishment ! Did 15 mins on the bike and 10 on the X Trainer and thought that must be enough !
Back for lunch (not alot to do here other than eat, train horses and exercise unless you sight see and as 2 of these were not an option in the gales that left eating and gymming only. The weather looked a bit brighter, i.e. the trees weren't being blown flat anymore and rain not horizontal so we were allowed to go to the stables to work the horses.
There was jumping familiarisation in the evening so only schooled Jasper for 20 mins, was good but could feel he'd worked hard yesterday. Had to wait around for the press and TV interviews which went Ok I thought and then had the riders briefing, all the usual content.
The weather, however, took a turn for the worse and at 7.30pm when the jumping started the wind and rain picked up once more. I can honestly say I have never ridden in such horrendous conditions, to the point where it was hilarious as I couldn't see the fences ! Jasper jumped superbly though, didn't touch a fence (hopefully be the same on Tuesday evening). It was great to do this though, to be able to jump in the main arena so the horses are used to it is a brilliant idea.
Finished by 9pm so food and bed.
August 5
Tuesday -Slept well again so up to ride Jasper by 8.40. Warmed up in the main arena as we're still able to school in there at present, all was well until they turned on another big screen (I think every horse nearly deposited its rider!) This is particularly bright and shows a simulated horse performing all 3 phases in eventing.
Had to gallop at my allotted time so after galloping (he felt very good) I went back in the arena where Jasper was much more comfortable with the scary screen thank goodness!! Rained and rained although this has helped the temperature alot, so as we had finished riding went off on a little excursion to Stanley market for a fantastic lunch next to the sea.
Did a small amount of shopping (not my favourite pastime) and returned to the village to work off lunch. Ran for 25 mins or until sufficiently exhausted ! Had a very small dinner at the village and a reasonably early night as have press etc again tomorrow ...........
August 4
Monday - Could've slept all day, finally catching up on my sleep although it will feel before it gets better. Left for the venue about 8.15 and it's already hot although the temperature was not so much hot as humid. This means you sweat - alot! About 95%. It's not a problem but you do need a hat that cools i.e. with vents and lots of changes of clothes and good deodorant.
Worked Jasper with Tracie, went beautifully. He knows this is a serious competition and reacts accordingly - no messing about. He is moving incredibly well on these surfaces too, and jumping well which we did a little of afterwards with Kenneth.
Watched some Dressage horses working and ours galloping, there is so much to see here, horses working everywhere until 11am when it gets shut down each day as it's too hot until 3pm. Ideal for us to have some chill out time or go to the Gym which I did again. Little and often is my policy this week.
In the evening we had kindly been invited to the HK Heritage museum, (Eventing team and dressage). This was a formal function where we met various different people including the Minister of Sport. We also had a tour showing us details from the very first Olympics, the museum is to show the Olympics from then until the present day. We are very lucky to be invited to a wide range of social functions.
August 3
Sunday - Woke up feeling much better than Saturday, although that wasn't difficult! I didn't start quite so early today as I wanted to ride in the heat. Seriously hot day, 37°, but again Jasper had plenty of energy and worked with Tracie on his relaxation. He is showing signs of doing a very competitive test. Getting used to the misting fans now, think he quite enjoys them.
Made the most of the fantastic weather sunbathing and swimming at the hotel pool, but not all so easy, ran in the Gym too. Is interesting watching everybody in there (as all the nations are in the village) competitive or what! I think it's important to do some exercise but be rested too, it's amazing how much the flight takes out of you.
Met the Mayor of HK with the dressage riders, we were given flower tea and egg tarts which were not quite as nice the dinner I had that evening in the Italian restaurant. However, the Mayor wished us luck and we said we were hoping for Gold obviously, or lots of Gold hopefully!
Saw the light show at the Sheraton, which is a fabulous hotel, (the dressage and Show Jumpers are staying there but we opted for the village which is a good thing as there is no alcohol so no temptation !). The Sheraton is extremely high so can see the river and across most of HK which is pretty amazing.
Returned after dinner about 11.30pm, definitely time for bed and slept superbly at last !
August 2
Saturday - Woke up feeling awful from lack of sleep but this did wear off quickly thank goodness. Had some breakfast and caught the shuttle bus to the venue. This service is fantastic and goes every 10 mins and staying at the village means security checks are less, something there are understandably alot of.
Rode Jasper around the main arena which is fantastic to be able to familiarise him with. It was approx 33° but he felt very good so didn't do too much, only 20mins, as I was to ride him later. We both sweat quite a bit but so far not excessively and although hot it's not as bad as I'd imagined.
Had to go to the Sheraton Hotel (where the owners are staying, a particularly nice hotel) for interviews with the press. Getting there was interesting on the train as we had no clue where we were going! Got a taxi home - much easier.
Waited to ride Jasper until dark in case he does his test under spotlights as it's very different from the day - all that electricity and buzzing. He was nicely bright and I probably rode him for 40 mins in total which was great as he seems to not be affected by the change in temperature at present. Hopefully all the hard work with rugs etc will pay off..
Another restless night, jet lag is not much fun !
August 1
Friday - It was already halfway through Friday and feeling Ok as we'd all slept on the plane so we decided it was a good idea to ride the horses as they'd had the last 2 days off.
We dropped off our luggage into the Olympic village which is a very smart hotel about 10mins shuttle bus away from the venue. The venue is AMAZING. I thought that Aachen was fantastic but there are so many arenas (guessing about 15, including an air conditioned indoor school) and a galloping track and a XC course for us to school over. The setting is quite surreal, all set within mountains and sky scrapers.
I rode Jasper round the hacking track in amazement at the enormity of it all, this really is going to be a very special experience. I was pleasantly surprised that it was about 31°, not too hot, and Jasper was fresh! Didn't do too much though as both need to acclimatise and at this stage it's easy to overdo it. The only thing he wasn't that keen on were the misting fans (something he needs to get over).
All the horses looked great though, a credit to our grooms, vet and support staff. Had dinner and an early night, was very tired, slept well to start with but woke up about 2am and unfortunately I appear to have jet lag, marvellous.
Spent half the night awake as did many of us !
July 31
Thursday - Woke up early as I decided to ride 5 before leaving for Heathrow at 1pm.
All were great, look forward to competing them when I get back. Rode until about 11.30 then did a quick session on the cross trainer before showering and packing remainder of my things including a bag of Alfa-A for Jasper as his got lost.
Just about fitted it into a suitcase and I already had 3 bags so definitely not travelling light! My parents kindly took me to the airport and when I arrived to check in there were quite a few other British athletes who were also on my flight. From Hong Kong they had to catch the ferry to Macaw, about 1 1/2 hr boat ride away.
Walking round the airport in Team GB kit certainly draws attention, so many people wished us luck, we certainly hope to make our country proud. We were lucky enough to travel Business Class so we would arrive rested. This is something I would love to get used to! Flat beds etc, arrived in HK at 1pm Friday (lost 7hrs as they are ahead).
July 30
Wednesday - Woke up at 4am to the sound of my alarm clock - not my favourite noise! Yogi kindly mucked out our stables whilst we took the horses for more grass - the grass was soaking this morning - perfect.
Jasper is also slightly better behaved at 4.30am! Left the yard at 5.30 in convoy to Stansted There were four lorries as William and Mary took their reserve horses. We made good time and arrived by 8am, where we met the Australians, Chinese, New Zealanders and American eventers and the British Dressage horses. The whole process took 3 hours to load all the horses but they all loaded well and I was able to lead Jasper on myself. It is very similar to putting him in a trailer, which was shared with Call Again Cavalier, as he had flown before.
I made sure he had his haynets and overnight bag and waved him goodbye - quite a stressful experience! They took off at 11.50 and I managed to take a distant photo of the plane for posterity.
Went home and rode the horses here - Joe and Beanie who are jumping better and better and schooled Kenny, Bruno and Dave who were equally as impressive. Had dinner with my family as my sister and her husband and children came around for a send off Chinese! This was great as I managed to persuade Amanda to help me pack my clothes (of which I have many) ready for my 6.25am flight from Heathrow on Thursday - very exciting ...........
July 29
Tuesday - An early start as we had a 7am trot up - all the horses looked great. They are so accident prone, so this is always a small worry!
Had a dressage lesson with Tracie which could not have gone better, he is heading for a good score..... Spent the remainder of the morning packing the trunks - thank god Sophie had sorted them, I'd still be deciding which rugs to use.
The girls then left for the airport at 1pm, all wearing their Team GB kit - they looked very smart! This meant I was in charge of Jasper until he flew the next day. I had strict instructions so made sure I followed them!
I hand grazed him for 2 1/2 hrs in total hoping he will have plenty of wet grass to line his stomach for the flight. Unfortunately Jasper decided it's good fun to play me up and thought I might lose him a few times - try explaining that to Sophie !
Had dinner and another early night ready for a very early start.
July 28
Monday - Woke up at 6 so that I'd be back in time for 10am at Stow again, and had to drop off the hire car which I had to allow time for - got there with 10 mins to spare!
Left for the gallops with Miners Frolic and Shaabrak on the lorry as well. All galloped very well and this was their final gallop. The day was hot which was helpful.
Had another fantastic lunch and then off to the heat chamber (I did restrain myself over lunch this time!). The chamber was set at 32° and 91% humidity, this was much easier than last time and we all did 24 mins on the exercise bike at 8 min intervals. My heart rate went up to 156 so pleased that it wasn't as high as the previous time
.
Went to dinner with Sophies' parents who came to see her. Had a lovely meal (thanks Mr & Mrs Smith!). Another early night though.
July 27
Sunday - Woke up to a beautiful day and we are lucky to have some hot weather at last to get some sort of acclimatisation. Again I rode the 4 here, Kenny and Joe jumped fantastically, Joe is taking a while as he is such a big horse, but next year I think he will be very good - sometimes it can take a long time to form the partnership - likewise with Kenny.
Schooled Dave and Beanie - both very good, the intensive training I have had is really helping with the other horses too.
Checked the two youngsters, Harry and Bomber (who is definitely growing!) it was a joke that he is a pony but I'm sure he'll be big enough. Used the rest of my time doing paperwork and all the things I don't find quite so much fun, and getting my gear sorted to go back to Stow again.
Early night and no alcohol!
July 26
Saturday - Up very early as we had a 7am trot up, all the horses looked great - very good news, we are all so close now it would be awful if something were to go wrong now.
Had a dressage lesson with Tracie, still working on softness and Jaspers' relaxation, which is really improving. As long as he stays relaxed, he will do a fabulous test.
Decided to give Jasper an easy Sunday as he hasn't had a day off in a while so I hired a car and went home. You wouldn't believe the difficulty insuring 'a professional event rider' for the reason we are a higher risk!!
Rode the 4 I have at the yard - Kenny, Mightaswell (Dave) Beanie and Jorrocks (Joe). They are doing a great job at home as all were lovely.
Ran for half an hour to work off the previous days dinner ! However, my best friend Jenny had arranged a good luck dinner for me so ate far too much again !
Had a lovely evening with friends I hadn't seen for a long, long time, but the week's socialising caught up with me and I was in bed by 11!
July 25
Friday - Jumped Jasper early as we had a busy day with press etc. Jasper jumped brilliantly, he is much softer and straighter now, hope he keeps his brilliant form up for another month!
Had some physio from Andy Thomas and then it was time to go to Hartpury for team photo's and interviews - the dressage riders and paralympians were also there.
After this we met Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall who kindly came and wished us luck. We (the Team) were invited for the evening to Laura Bechtolsheimer's for dinner. They have the most amazing place, beautifully kept. The indoor swimming pool was covered over and set as a dining room.
There must have been around 50 people - with support staff, partners etc. They had generously provided dinner which was a themed night - either Chinese or English (of which I had both) the food was fantastic!! Had a dessert as well - must do some serious exercise Saturday!
July 24
Thursday - Had an easy morning as only galloping - so had a cross trainer and bike session and watched a few other flat lessons. The exercise equipment is strategically placed so we can exercise and watch at the same time, very handy.
Left for the gallops at 1.30. Mary Hambro is kindly letting us use her facilities. Galloped Jasper up the track twice, felt very good so no need to do any more - I want him to be rested and in full fitness when we get there. Gallops are only 20 mins away which is great, hoped to watch the Eventers Grand Prix at Hickstead but I missed it! Hopefully someone has recorded it .....
Had time to do some paperwork and then went out for dinner to a local pub in the evening, is all very civilised !
July 23
Wednesday - Had a lie in! This is one of the advantages of only 1 horse, I didn't leave the hotel until 8.15!
Have to work out all the clothes I need in and out as there are strict regulations as to what you can wear when. Did a session on the cross trainer, not too much though as we are off to the heat chamber this afternoon.
Had a flat lesson with Tracie and was much better than the previous day, and really showed some pleasing work. As long as he is relaxed and doesn't anticipate he should do a very good test.
Went to the heat chamber after lunch - not a good move - lunch was too big ! The food here is fantastic. Exercises in the heat tank in 38° and 85% humidity - not nice, and felt very full still, not a good combination. The hot showers afterwards weren't too amusing either!
Had a quick look round Stow and then had another lovely dinner back at base !
July 22
Tuesday - Woke up at 6am, ready to leave at 7. Charlotte Hawley was already on the yard sorting the last few things out. Said goodbye to everyone but only until Saturday when I'm back for the weekend. Our quarantine is at Stow on the Wold, far enough from home! Arrived at PEQ and disinfected everything, lorry et.
Had a flat lesson with Tracie, went very well working on Jasper's softness and relaxation and submission. After the lesson we visited the local Pony Club - myself, Yogi, Mary and Daisy. They were very grateful for our visit and we ended up signing about 70 shirts, notepads and chaps!
Had various meetings regarding rules and regulations whilst in PEQ - should be all straightforward. Staying in a hotel which is very pleasant, I like staying in the lorry but a hotel room with a bath etc is far better!
July 2
Monday - Had an incredibly busy day making final preparations for quarantine and working the horses before I left for basically 4 weeks.
Had a session with Carys (PT) as well, am looking to be in good shape. Worked the horses with Jill Day (Dressage) and Ed and Corey had lessons too as they will be the people responsible for their schooling from now on. All went well, especially Jasper. We also had massages from Pennie Hooper, who again did a fantastic job - she really does help us.
Charlotte finished washing and packing the lorry, she has done a superb job and has made it stress - free for me.
July 20
Sunday - Dropped off two horses for holiday - Harry (5yo) and Bomber (3yo) as they are to have a month off whilst I'm away. As they are only babies some time off will do them good and Harry (Azeb) has been fantastic so far and has already competed in 5 or 6 Pre Novices this year.
Went to Newmarket for my last gallop here where David Marlin met me with a heart rate monitor. Jasper is improving every time now and his heart rate is much lower than previous gallops and with increased speed so .... looking in good form. I think this is by far the fittest he has ever been, having changed my galloping routine after Badminton this year.
Jumped Kenny, he feels back on form and Jorrocks Curtis and Bruno (Ultimate Opposition) were also very good. Schooled Beanie (Breeze), his flatwork is vastly improved so should be ready to event when I get back.
Worked very hard on the cross trainer and treadmill !
July 19
Saturday - Had a very relaxing day with the family, decided as I don't have many weekends without competitions that I would spend quality time with everybody. Dropped off Good Sport to Mathew Flowers, a dressage rider in Ipswich, who must be worried about what he's agreed to, as I explained all Bob's unusual quirks to him !
Bob is my pet so he is quite spoilt (something I openly admit to). Started sorting out all my gear to take to Hong Kong (or rather Sophie did !) not long now......
July 18
Friday - Up at 4am and off to Aston at 4.30. Jasper was not that impressed at more dressage practice and performed an average test - he is anticipating the movements slightly - he is clever and knows the test after only having performed it twice, so some careful training and not practising any more movements now will help.
Never had intended to jump so came home and then had a family outing to the races at Newmarket where we saw Girls Aloud who were very good. I don't get much opportunity to see my family - Aunt and Uncle, Cousins and friends, so was fantastic and had a great time. It's as important to relax as it is to train when life is so hectic !
July 17
Thursday - Another busy day - jumped most of the horses, all jumped well, have been working on their softness following Kenneth's lesson.
Had entered Jasper for 2 tests at Fenning Farm where he performed extremely well ! 67% and 1st in Medium 71 and 67% and 1st in Advanced Medium 84 which I was very pleased with as there were a few small mistakes.
Went for a run early evening and bed early as had an 8.30 dressage at Aston i.e. Walls next day.
July 16
Wednesday - Went to the physio Brian Simpson again first thing - making sure I'm in full fitness which he assures me I am. Took Ellie XC Schooling, she was great, looks really promising.
Went to the gallops again, nearly Jasper's final time a Newmarket, only one more on Sunday. He galloped well in his rug, the clip has helped as he hardly sweated and he's finding the hill much easier now.
Dropped Amber off at Richard Maxwell's as she has been a little tricky recently, so fingers crossed he'll be able to help me ......
July 15
Tuesday - Had another day dashing in and out - realised I needed some clipper oil for Jasper as he was being clipped later and I didn't think his skin would appreciate a poor substitute ! Charlotte and Ed clipped him beautifully - definitely ready to go now.
Went to Mike and Camilla Shephers for dinner. I was given a fantastic meal - very suitable for an athlete! Another late night though - am not so used to these any more !
July 14
Monday - Had a busy day schooling the horses in the morning as Kenneth Clawson was coming in the afternoon to give me a jumping lesson. Am finding I have less and less time now with all the sorting out and organising for when I'm away.
Picked Kenneth up from the station in my Team Discovery and he taught me on Jasper who jumped brilliantly. Jorrocks Curtis and Kenny also jumped very well.
After the lessons we went to the Chinese Embassy to celebrate China's first equestrian competitor's qualification for the Olympics. It will be amazing for Alex to compete on home ground, something I hope to experience in 2012.
July 13
Sunday - As no competition, had a day at home working Beanie, Patch, Wellie and Kenny. In the afternoon went to the gallops where I met Yogi to assess Jasper's fitness. He is galloping well and recovers quickly and is definitely not so hot in his rug now. We discussed his fitness plan and he still has four more canters and swimming so should peak at the right time.
Had some time to spare for a change, so started blitzing the lorry as has to be spotless for quarantine and is far from that! Cross training again in the evening with multiple layers and fleecy hat!
July 12
Saturday - Rode a couple at home before leaving to collect Amber, a mare of mine that has been at Robbie Haag's.
From there went to Great Witchingham event. Rode Harry who performed a lovely test but was given a slightly disappointing mark - but he jumped a superb double clear to finish 3rd. Ellie performed a good but green test, had one down and was slightly phased by the XC, just needs more training.
This was my last competition before Hong Kong so I can concentrate on Jasper next week.
July 11
Friday - have two more Pre-Novices at Great Witchingham this weekend so had to quickly XC school them again just in case they were spooky. Ed helped out again as no lorry until tonight.
Worked all the other horses - are all going very well.
July 10
Hooray for a sunny day! It is so much easier when it's dry.
Worked some of the horses with Jill Day, my dressage trainer, had good lessons with Kenny, Jasper and Harry (Azeb). PM had to be chauffeured by Ed Cross in his lorry to the gallops as mine is still in the garage fixing a small problem that seems to be everlasting.
Jasper galloped well in his rug, he's feeling pretty goo. Taught in the evening and worked on the Cross Trainer hard again.
July 9
Wednesday - was another horrible rainy day, what is happening to British Summers?
Went to Physio first thing making sure I have no aches and pains after my fall at the weekend. Rode when I got back, jumped some and schooled, all very pleasing. I worked really hard on the cross trainer with lots of layers - got quite warm.
July 8
Tuesday - left early to go to Birmingham NEC to collect my kit for the Olympics. Was quite amusing trying on all the different outfits! Now have 2 suitcases full of things from suits to trainers to sunglasses to sun cream! Needed my Team GB Land Rover Discovery to get it all home!
Rode when I got home and then in the evening I went for an 'Olympics' dinner with 2 other fellow athletes off to Beijing, Goldie, a Javelin thrower and Glen a hockey player. Wished them luck, hope they come back with Gold!
July 7
Had a relatively quiet day at home. Penny the massage lady treated me and 4 horses - was very uncomfortable at times, but recommended. Tested Jasper's saddle with the pliance system, courtesy of Mark Fisher, our team saddler. Very interesting, saddle was stuffed accordingly to keep the saddle more stable.
Had a meeting with Forest Farmacy, a new company with organic products that are going to sponsor me with their products.
July 6
Sunday was a hideous day - torrential rain and very strong winds.
Good Sport jumped well SJ, had 1 down and times faults. Jasper jumped a superb clear round. The rain kept on and on but eventually at lunchtime it started to brighten up. We had team photo's with new team members, all trying to look warm when it was actually freezing!
Went XC on Bob, was perfect until the last combination where he suddenly went quite green and tipped me off 4 from home, very disappointing as I was looking for a qualification for Blenheim. He then proceeded to run around for a while, but eventually caught him and completed.
Jasper was fantastic, feels very fit and ready. Finished 20th.
Left for home and eventually got back at 10.30pm.
July 5
Saturday - Had a reasonably early start, Joe warmed up very well and performed a lovely Novice test, was nearly faultless so I was very surprised when I saw the mark of 35 - nearly one of the worst. Sometimes I don't understand what the judges are looking for - especially as the horse moves beautifully.
However, he had an unlucky fence down SJ and jumped well XC except for one small blip where he was overbold, a nice problem to have.
I then performed the Olympic test again with Jasper at lunchtime in the main arena, he was excellent again except to canter, so we practised this a few times until he perfected it!
July 4
Rode Jasper first thing, he was more settled than Thursday but still needed a good warm up. Put him away, Charlotte (Head Girl) plaited him beautifully. He again was more relaxed warming up and then performed a good test, he is incredibly still in the contact now, just anticipated the canter and struck off in right canter instead of left, then settled again very quickly.
Had a score of 49.2 which was Ok but will be better in Hong Kong!
Good Sport did a lovely test but his tongue appears at various times so the judges had to mark it accordingly and he ended up with a very disappointing 61. He is capable of a low 40's score without the tongue !!!
July 3
Rode as many as I could before I left at 11 for Barbury Castle with Jasper, Bob and Joe. Have a relatively easy weekend with just the three. Worked them when I got there, Bob and Jasper were both quite fresh. Think I will work them hard tomorrow before their dressage tests !!
July 2
Went to the swimming pool again first thing, swam Jasper, Bob (Good Sport) and Dave (Mightaswell) then had a good jump lesson with Joe (Jorrocks Curtis) and Barrett Watson.
Went to London for the EHOA AGM where I spoke about the Olympics and the build up to them and what I shall expect out there.
Then had a lovely dinner in London and returned home at 11pm.
July 1
On Tuesday we had the trot up with team vet Jenny Hall which went well (phew!) and then left for the gallops in Newmarket where Jasper had to gallop in his rug in the midday sun.
The first time it was actually very warm! Could do with some more days like that, unfortunately the weather has not been very kind in helping our horses acclimatise to the Hong Kong heat easily.
David Marlin met me at the gallops as he has been helping with Jaspers' fitness by using heart rate monitors, which I have found very helpful.
June 30
Went early to Team Training which seemed to take forever to get to this time - Stow on the Wold is a long way from Bury St Edmunds!
After re-scheduling due to the traffic, Jasper jumped very well and had a great dressage lesson with Tracie, working on his suppleness and softness.
Attended a talk in the evening which was very interesting with tips on mentally preparing for and during the Games. We also learned that sadly Lucy will not be joining the team now, I can't imagine how she must feel but if it's anything like I felt last year it'll take a long time to come to terms with.
Daisy and Tina are now new Team Members, so delighted for both of them!
June 29
Sunday - Went swimming with Jasper, hate deciding how many laps he should do, it's quite stressful when they look tired! Went XC water schooling after, just in case. All horses brilliant.
Went home, rode more horses and then went to pick up a 3yo that someone else has backed for me as I didn't think this was an ideal job for me right now..........
Packed the lorry for Team Training in Stow on the Wold ready to set off at 6am.
June 28
Straight off to Rolleston. Took Kenny and Bruno for first time Advanced. Kenny was not himself all day, did a stressed test and had 5 down which I/we have never had so withdrew him from the XC, must be a reason, horses do not lose form this quickly.
Bruno was fantastic, did a good test, 1 down SJ and clear XC, so was 6th - his best result yet. Have high hopes for him.
Took Jasper to work as a little bright at Salperton, was much better so continue working hard for Barbury.
June 27
Friday had a Press Day organised by British Eventing - was painless. Quite enjoyed it actually, getting to know the local press well now, so is Jasper! But he's not so keen on standing for photos for hours - quite the Prima Donna now.
June 26
Have had a very busy week again!
Training session with Carys on Thursday - my Personal Trainer. Some very good dressage lessons with Jill Day.Rode Jasper, Bruno and Harry in the lessons - all progressing well!
